Subject: Monroe County Hall of Fame

Hi, folks,
Each year two people with Monroe County roots are voted into the Monroe
County Hall of Fame--one from pre-1946 and one from post 1946. The
nominees in each category are identified along with a biosketch in the
BLOOMINGTON HERALD TIMES. Readers then vote for one each category.
The pre-1946 nominees this year, as noted on July 3, 2000, p. C1, are:
Willis Gorman, b. Jan 12, 1816, in Kentucky. Moved to Bloomington in 1835.
Made clerk of the state senate, 1837-38; member of the Indiana House of
Representatatives, 1841-1844; graduated IU with law degree, 1845; member
of the U. S. House of Representative, 1849; governor of Minnesota
Territory,
1849-1853; practice law in Minnesota 1857-1861; and brigadier general in
the
Civil War, 1862. Died in Minnesota, May 1876.
John Hetherington, b. Sheridan, Indiana, 1891. Graduated Bloomington High
School, 1909, and Indiana Veterinary College in 1911. Held many civic
positions
in Monroe County including: civil defense director during WWII;
committeeman,
Republican precinct post; chairman of one of the first Bloomington Hospital
fund drives; lieutenant the the Veterinary Corps during WWI; lieutenant
colonel
in the Indiana National Guard. Died October 30, 1966.
Marcellus Neal, born in Lebanon, Tenn. Was the first black garudate of
IU,
1895. Made excellent grades and was active in the community. Completed
grauate
degree and became a teacher. Directed the science department of a
highschool
in Dallas, Texas. Moved to Chicago and took a civil service job; wrote
for
publication. Killed in a hit and run accident.
James Parks, b. c. 1781. On the first board of Monroe County
commissioners,
organized the county, purchased land where courthouse now stands. Elected
county school commissioner and served in the legislatuare. Died in 1882
at
age of 101.
Joseph Swain, b. Pendleton, Indiana, in 1857. Graduated IU in 1883 and
1885.
Completed doctorates from IU and four other universities. Taught math and
biology at IU 1883-1891; president of IU 1893 to 1902; president of
Swarthmore
College 1902 to 1921. Died May 19, 1927.
