Hi, folks,
Our list has a volunteer in need of a project.
Originally, the project I had in mind was the Monroe County guardian's book
1 (1913-1930) which notes, among other things: name of the guardian, name
of the ward (minors and persons of unsound mind), date of birth for each
minor ward, name of the deceased parent for each minor ward, and date the
ward was brought to the attention of the court. Each of these records is
two pages in length and each bears the same page number. I have
transcribed 80 pages by hand, 40 pages have been entered in a database and
indexed, and are in a format that could easily be shared with the list by a
volunteer.
Then when I was at the Monroe County Historical Society yesterday, I got
this bright idea that it would not be too difficult (but time consuming) to
put the WPA death index (1882-1920) for Monroe County into a database and
make it available either to the list (bulky) or at a website that could be
linked to from the Monroe County web page maintained by Julian.
Several projects are being worked on by various volunteers that are not yet
completed. I don't want to divert the attention away from the completion
of these projects, which makes only one of the two above-noted projects an
option. Of the two, which would you prefer.
Please keep in mind when you make your decision that I will continue to
work on the guardianship book that could be shared on-line at a later time
or simply made available in book-type format upon completion. On the other
hand, the death index is 168 pages with each page containing probably 50-60
deaths each containing the name of the deceased, age at death, date and
place of death. I have been advised that WPA documents are public records
and, therefore, not protected by copyright.
Ultimately, the decision will rest with the volunteer, but the input of the
list subscribers would be a valuable reference point.
