Subject: ALLEN FUNERAL HOME RECORDS, Monroe County, IN, Vol. 3, 1918 - 1920. ( S ) CORRECTED
Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2000 17:45:57 -0500

In March, 2000, the Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington, Indiana, began
sharing their early records with Randi Richardson so that they might be made
available to the library and preserved as important historical documents.
The early records start with 1908 and predate the establishment of the
funeral home in 1917.

The first volume made available was Volume I (1908 - 1911). The second
volume, representing the years 1912 - 1917, has been lost. In this, the
third volume, representing the years 1918-1920, the following categories
were included in the standardized, 1-page format.

Name of the deceased
Parents of deceased
Parents' place of birth
Age
Sex
Race
Occupation
Last place of residence
Length of residence in state
Marital status
Place of birth
Cause of death
Name of person who ordered service
Attending physician
Officiating clergyman
Place of burial
Goods and services provided
Account information

There were 298 pages in the book. Four of the pages, 41 - 44, were
missing. Additionally, many of the records were not fully completed.

Occasionally, even the date of death was missing and, in that event, the
date of the funeral was utilized to represent the approximate date of death.
These dates are provided as guidelines to assist researchers in obtaining
obituaries and official death records. They are not intended to be proof
of death.

The legibility of the records was, in some instances, quite poor. When
there was doubt about the correct spelling of a name, either the deceased
or the parent of someone deceased, it was checked against other county
records. While that enhanced accuracy, it did not guarantee accuracy.

All information contained in the funeral home records should, to the extent
possible, be corroborated with other sources. Corroboration will provide
the best accuracy.

The records were originally created in chronological order by the date of
death or the date that services were provided by the funeral home. Once
the records were copied, they were, however, re-organized in alphabetical
order so as to make them easier to find.

An abbreviated index of this volume was sent to the INMONROE list that is
sponsored on line by Rootsweb. It looks similar to the index herein, but,
in the interest of space, excludes the names of parents. Furthermore, it
is different because it was done in parts, e.g., names beginning with the
letters A - C are in one segment, and so on.

The entire contents of the archives to the INMONROE list may be viewed by
anyone without charge. To do this, go to the Rootsweb home page at
<www.Rootsweb.com> and select the interactive search engine from the menu of
Search Engines. Then follow the guidelines as they are written.

Copies of actual funeral home records will be available at the Monroe County
Public Library, Bloomington, Indiana, after May 15, 2000. Please keep in
mind that requests probably will not be honored until the material is bound.
