OLD SOLDIER DEAD
Alexander Hawkins, a Veteran of Two Wars
Alexander Hawkins, one of the oldest veterans of this county, died at 3:30
yesterday afternoon in his 77th year after an illness of many weeks. The
funeral will be held from the Morton Street Church of Christ of which the
deceased was a member, tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock, in charge of Elder
Adamson and Rev. Clark, and burial at Rose Hill.
Mr. Hawkins was a soldier of both the Mexican and Civil wars, and was an
upright, honorable citizen. His children are: Miranda McPike of Lawrence
county, Mrs. Lizzie Campbell of Bloomington, Mrs. Sallie Voss of South
Dakota, Harry Hawkins of Heltonvillle, Mrs. Isis Helms of Terre Haute. He
leaves two surviving sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Keifly of Iowa and Margaret
Anderson of Sullivan, and one brother, Adam Hawkins of Terre Haute.
The G. A. R. will attend the funeral in a body.
There will be a call meeting of the G. A. R. tomorrow morning at nine
o'clock in the hall. The purpose will be to make arrangements to attend
the funeral of Alex Hawkins. The following pall bearers have been
selected: Moses St. Clair, Thomas Eller, William Adams, Jacob Carmichael,
William Hepley and Thomas Kilpatrick.
