Bloomington Telephone, September 29, 1883, p. 1.

Last Thursday morning about 4 o'clock, the northeast part of town was
startled by loud appeals for help with the shout of fire, and in a few
minutes the house occupied by a young colored man by the name of Britton
was discovered to be in flames. By the time anyone was to the place the
house was past saving and it was discovered that an old lady--Britton's
grandmother--had perished in the flames. It is supposed the fire was
started from a lamp in her room as she usually kept it burning through the
night. When the occupants of the house first discovered the flames an
effort was made to get the woman out, but the girls (grandaughters) were
not strong enough, as she was lame and very heavy. Mrs. Britton was
seventy-five years old. The property belonged to George Bollenbacher.
Loss, $600; no insurance.
