Bloomington Daily Telephone, November 14, 1932, p. 5. The information
noted below was from a column called Old Bloomington. It cited the
Bloomington Progress on April 16, 1879, that noted "Doings of Forty Years
Ago, September Term, 1842."
Ordered that Leason Shirley be licensed to keep a ferry over the west fork
of White River on said Shirley's own land, lot No. 1 of the South fraction
of Section 6, in township 10, north of Range 2 West, situated in Monroe
County, and where the Gosses ferry road, leading from Bloomington to
Greencastle crosses White River, and further that said Shirley furnish a
good boat 55 feet long and 18 1/2 feet wide with two good hands at all
times to manage said ferry. Ferriage, to wit: for 1 footman, 6 1/2 cents;
man and horse, 12 1/2 cents; carriage and horse, 18 1/2 cents, 2 horses and
wagon, 25 cents; 4 horses and wagon, 37 1/2 cents; 6 horses and wagon, 50
cents; hogs, per head, 1 1/2 cents; sheep, per head, 1 1/2 cents; cattle,
per head, 3 1/2 cents; loose horses, per head, 3 cents.
