Nola, when I was at the genealogy library yesterday I saw a stack of old
court records on the desk waiting for your attention. Given our recent
conversation about Fieldon Sexton, I took a peek at his documents. The
three pages I found there were all pertaining to his insanity.

It was interesting to read these documents in light of the information
about Fieldon reported in the VETERAN'S RECORDS--ENROLLMENTS MONROE COUNTY,
INDIANA, 1886, Art Westneat, compiler. In sum, Fieldon Sexton served as a
private in the Civil War during the 1860s. It was noted that he suffered
from lung disease and was sent to Camp Carrington in Indianapolis, Indiana,
in 1861. While there, his mind was affected and he was transferred to a
hospital for the insane.

At least one person on this list has a Sexton connection and I thought that
individual might appreciate the information. I got interested because
Fieldon's daughter, Kate, married a Snoddy.

On April 13, 1865, according to Monroe County, Indiana, court recoreds,
James W. Sexton noted that Fieldon Sexton was drafted in 1864 to serve for
one year and, during the period of his enlistment became "partially
insane...incapable of transacting his business." Therefore, James W.
Sexton asked the court to appoint a guardian to receive whatever sum may be
due Fieldon. A second document, same date, indicates that James W. Sexton,
John Sexton, and John Knight were, in fact, appointed as his guardians. A
third document, same date, indicates that Fieldon was 22 years old.
