Dear India List Members:

Does anyone out there know where BUCKIE DEN is located? I found the following
reference in the book, "Angus or Forfarshire", by Alex J. Warden:

"Near Buckie Den a monument upwards of forty feet high, in the form of an
obelisk, has been erected, bearing the following inscription - To the memory
of Lieutenant-Colonel James Blair, of the Bengal Army, born on the 7th
November, 1792. He died at sea, on board the ship Madagascar, during a voyage
to the Cape of Good Hope, undertaken for the recovery of his health, on the
12th of August, 1847. High in the estimation of the government of India, he
had for the last twelve years of his life commanded the cavalry division of
His Highness the Nizam's army, and this monument was erected by his brother
officers, European and native, to commemorate their admiration of his
character as an officer, and their affectionate recollection of him as a
friend."

Lt.-Col. James Blair served in India for 36 years. He married Charlotte
Cecilia Vanrenen, daughter of Brig.-Gen. Jacob Vanrenen.

His brother, Lt.-Col. Henry Francis Blair, served with the Royal Bengal
Engineers. In 1868, he married Sophia Grace Bott, daughter of Capt. John Bott
of the 5th Bengal Light Cavalry.

ANY INFORMATION THAT ANYONE CAN GIVE ME ABOUT THESE BLAIR BROTHERS, OR ANY
OTHER BLAIR'S WHO SERVED IN INDIA WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Thanks,
Ed Blair.
