THE WHITTEMORE CHAMPION. May 11, 1932. "FUNERAL RITES HELD SATURDAY FOR FRANK GAPPA. Pioneer Resident Died Last Wednesday Evening After Long Illness."
Frank Gappa is dead.
Many hearts were filled with sorrow last Wednesday evening when it became known that Frank Gappa had passed away.
Mr. Gappa had been fighting gamely a losing battle against the grim reaper for two years, only his characteristic fortitude carrying him over the last few months. He was 76 years old at the time of his death.
The funeral services were held from St. Michael's Catholic church last Saturday morning, requiem high mass being sung by Father John Hyland, assisted by St. Michael's Junior choir.
Pallbearers were H. W. Geelan, F. J. Rochford, Wm. Higgins, Simon Roth, J. S. Cullen and Jas. Keigel.
Mr. Gappa was born at West Prussia, Germnay, in 1855, and on June 10, 1879 came to America.
He was married to Faustina Kajewski Sept. 25, 1881 at Algona, Iowa. Settling on a farm in Fairfield township near Algona, they lived for 43 years. Some years ago the family moved to Whittemore, which has since been his home. Here he made many friends, who admired him for his cheerful dispostion which persisted even during the long months that he was confined to his home. His wife preceded him in death but a few months and it is believed that her passing hastened his death.
Surviving children are: Andrew of Graettinger; Theodore, Anthony, Mrs. Harve Higley and Mrs. Fred Domek of Fairville; Mrs. Fred Bailey and Mrs. Arnold Krause of Fenton; Frank Gappa, Mrs. Tom Ford and Mary Gappa of Whittemore.
He is also survived by one brother, Gregory of El Reno,Okla. Besides the brothers and sisters he left behind 36 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Our sympathy goes out to the sorrowing family, and to Miss Mary Gappa whose love and devotion made his last days more pleasant.
N.B.: ALSO, in this paper was a list of "out of town people who attended the funeral rites for the late Frank Gappa". It was identical to the list in the Emmetsburg Democrat but added Mr. and Mrs. John Gaeders of Cylinder....Mr. and Mrs. John Mertz of Algona.... Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kajewski of Algona.--W.F.
