Emmetsburg Democrat 9 May 1908:

John Rutledge is now playing with the league base ball team at San Jose,
California, and is making good. He is quite an athlete. It is a place of
about 30,000.

Miss Jennie Bigley was down from Graettinger Friday. She was accompanied by
her sister, Miss Etta, who is home from Cedar Rapids on a brief vacation.

A few days ago Father Carroll of Ayrshire lost a light overcoat between
Emmetsburg and Graettinger. It was of a dark grayish color. The finder will
please notify him or leave it at this office.

Mrs. Maguire has given up her position as night operator in the local
telephone exchange. She is succeeded by Miss Marie Higgins. Miss Martin has
taken the place of Miss Higgins on a day force.

The government seiners claim that Spirit Lake is alive with game fish. All
our lakes and rivers should be kept well stocked. In this way all classes of
people will be more or less benefited by our fish and game laws.

Mrs. Thomas Donovan and son William left for St. Louis Monday evening. They
went by way of McGregor and will go down the Mississippi river. It will be
a nice trip. Mrs. Donovan has a son living at that place.

The Laurens Sun says that C.A. Wessman of that place recently sold an $80
set of harness to Dan Johnson. It was on exhibition for some time and
aroused the envy of every farmer who saw it. Our contemporary says that $80
seems a big price for a set of harness, yet if a $30 set of harness is none
too good for a $100 team what ought a $500 team wear?

J.F. Brennan, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Brennan, is now assistant district
attorney at San Francisco. He is actively engaged in prosecutions under
indictments nearly every day in the year. He has nothing to do with
preliminary hearings, his offictial duties confining him strictly to court
room work. He gives some attention to his private practice. His legal
partner is E.A Lane, one of the leading attorneys on the Pacific coast. The
latter was formerly the legal adviser of Gifford Pinchott of the U.S. Forest
service. He is at present special counsel for San Francisco.

C.D. Miller of Whittemore has leased the Arnolds Park hotel and will conduct
it durint the resort season. He has been landlord of the St. Nicholas at
Whittemore for some time.

Wm. Osborne, formerly of this place, was recently arrested at Spirit Lake
for selling the Rawley medicines without a license. He was fined $100. He
will appeal the case to the district court.
