Mrs. John Pendergast Dead
Yesterday morning our citizens learned with regret of the death of Mrs. John
Pendergast, one of the oldest and best known ladies in this community. She had
been ill for some time and for several days but little hopes had been
entertained for her recovery. The funeral will be held today at 10:00am.

The deceased was born at Mullinger, in the county of West Meath, Ireland, in
1827. In 1845 she came to the United States. She lived at Boston, Mass. for two
years, after which she moved to Kane county, Illinois. In 1848, she was married
at Crystal Lake, that state, to Thos. Lowery. To them one son and two daughters
were born. The son, Patrick Lowery, died two years ago. The daughters are Mrs.
James Foy, of this place, and Mrs. James Conway, of Emmet county.

After the death of Mr. Lowery the deceased came to Iowa and was married at Ft.
Dodge, in 1864, to John Pendergast, who was one of the sturdy pioneers of this
community. To Mr. and Mrs. Pendergast four sons and two daughters were born.
They are James, John, William, Martin, Mrs. M. Jackman, Jr., and Miss Bridget
Pender. All the sons and daughters were at her bedside when she passed away. Mr.
Pendergast died at this place about 11 years ago.

Some forty odd years ago the Pendergast home was built on the bank of Meduim
lake, the present location of Mr. Saunders' fine home. It was well known to most
of the early settlers of northwest Iowa. Friends and neighbors often gathered
there and they were ever kindly received, for the happy couple that occupied it
were widely estemmned for their cheerfulness, simplicity, and warm hearted
hospitality. No stranger was ever turned out to seek elsewhere a night's lodging
or a needed meal. The home was humble, but the weary traveler was welcome to the
best that Mr. and Mrs Pender could provide, and nothing was accepted in return.
But time brings sad changes. Both have passed away. Their familiar faces have
disappeared behind the scene that divides the present from the evermore.
Benevolent, comforting hands have been folded to rest: warm, generous,
encouraging hearts have been stilled in death. Mrs. Pender was a devoted wife, a
sincere, solicitous, Christian mother. Her acquaintances were her friends: she
had no enemies. She did nothing that could arouse the ill will of those about
her. At the bier of such a neighbor, friend, mother, the hundreds who knew her,
confided in her, respected her, pause to praise her name and to offer their
earnest trubute of respect to her memory.
