Still hunting those "dreaded" McNally's. Francis McNally (b. 1829), his
father, Patrick and several siblings left Co. Tyrone to immigrate to America
in the early 1850's. Francis McNally married Mary Duggan and traveled
westward and they settled in Davenport,Iowa. According to family lore the
rest of the McNally's stayed "out east." Over the years, Francis moved his
family steadily westward and settled in Exira, Iowa where he and his wife
and several children are buried.
According to family lore, sometime after Francis came to America he was
asked his name and when he gave it to the person, he was told that he really
needed to change the name because he would have a lot of problems with the
American people because of spelling, pronunciation, etc. (thus McNally
became his name) and since we do not have any other information on the rest
of the family, this has made the search very complicated.
While studying the 1920 Federal census for Exira, Audubon County we found
John A McAnallen, age 25, born in PA listed as living with his cousins, John
and Rose McNally, son and daughter of Francis. We have searched every
avenue available to us to find any McAnallen family in PA, but have not
received any responses from emails sent to this family.
John seems to be the only link to finding the siblings and hopefully,
parents of our great grandfather, Francis. Any suggestions or other links
would be greatly appreciated.
