I just recently was looking at a 1930 census and noted that many of my
ancestors who previously had been born in "Ireland"" were suddenly born
in "The Free State of Ireland" I suspected that it was primarily a
political statement. Someone else has pointed out that the "Free State"
didn't exist until 1921, which explains the 1930 appearance. Don H.
