True story. A friend of mine ( Kelly not related ) visited Intel
Ireland, near where his bad boys lived in Leinster. After work he
decided to look in a nearby town for possible relatives, and was
directed to a local pub as a good place to meet and talk to natives.
He walked in with his Nike Shoes and Intel Inside Tee-shirt and took a
spot in the middle of the bar and ordered a Guinness (never had one
before, but do as they do etc.
Rough looking guys each end of the bar immediately changed stools and
bracketed him on either side, the one on his left putting his face
uncomfortably close to his ear, and just sat there watching him.
Finally, "and who might you be stranger?" I'm a Kelly and my great
grandfathers came from somewhere around here.
SILENCE for 60 seconds or so, and uncomfortable silence.
Then the one on the right, "An which of the Kelly's are you?"
"I assume there is one family with lots of members, but I don't know
which one......do I have a choice?"
"There is the Kelly's down river a bit; they build boats; There is a
doctor and a lawyer here.....And don't forget the school teacher"
chipped in the other one.
"Then there is the bunch over in the woods.....they raise sheep and are
in trouble with the law often..................but all of them are a
bunch of robbers and thieves."
"So given a choice, which family should I claim?"
"The guys in the woods. They steal sheep and wood when they can, but
they are the most honest of the whole bunch; Or you could chose the guy
who owns half the town. His name is Kelly, but he is from England, not a
real Kelly.............he's rich, but beware you don't learn first hand
how he got that way"
My friend said everyone was friendly after they got past being
suspicious of a stranger.
He bought a few round of drinks and talked to fifteen or so people, but
never got a straight story about the Kelly's......every story was
different. What a wild bunch.
I would dearly love to go find out for myself what it is like doing
research in Ireland.
