The real reason to sign up for ancestry are the WorldTree entries which are
searchable once you have signed on. I come back to them time after time.
The Genealogy.com equivalent are the Family pages which are also in the
basic rate. The data bases you pay additional for are really a shot in the
dark, like the state lottery. My feeling is if you can't find it at
Rootsweb, LDS, Ancestry or Genealogy.com, the internet may not be the best
approach other than the search engines which can find web pages which are
not on the big 4. I agree both at Ancestry and Genealogy.com the object is
to lead you to where they can make money, and we can't fault them for that,
but, neither do we have to fork out a lot of cash for small specific data
bases. I signed up for the census at Ancestry but it took so long to load
it became frustrating and I cancelled (no small accomplishment, cancelling,
by the way).
