Subject: [IA-IRISH] naturalization records

I was lucky to find my gr-grandfather's application for
naturalization and decree in the County Courthouse where he
settled. It contained the date of the application and his age,
which is the only clue I have of his approximate time of birth.
It gives a month when he arrived in the US, but no port of entry.
Unfortunately it only shows that he is from "Ireland."
If it were not for finding these records at the county level, I
would have no idea where to look, as I cannot find where they
entered the US. Family anecdote only has that they "arrived in
the US ca. 1862" but not where. one branch of the family says
they came into Boston and stayed there awhile before moving to
their Iowa farm. As yet I can find no record of them in Boston.
Poor guy, six months after he became a citizen he supposedly was
killed in a logging accident, leaving his widow with 6 young
sons and a farm to care for. the only record of his death I've
found to date is a probate record.
Applications sometimes were made where the immigrant entered the
US, right? then the decree usually followed in about 5 years,
so a person would have to know where their ancestor entered and
also where they were ca. five years later to know where to look.
And of course this only applies to adult males.
