I'd appreciate some advice where to look next.
I am looking for my grandparents' marriage license or record. A
Delaware Co. History and my grandparents' obituaries showed that
they were married in "1893" but nothing mentions in which
county. I looked through Delaware County records at the
courthouse (where they farmed) not only in 1893 but 5 years
before, 5 years after. No marriage record found. I called
someone at the Archdiocese of Dubuque, they looked through
records for a couple years before and after. Nothing found. So
I figured they were married where she grew up, in Jackson Co. and
sent $10 to Vital Records at the statehouse. Today I received a
"certificate" from Vital Records noting that they searched
Jackson Co. 1893 and found no record of my grandparents'
marriage, and their search used the $10. I found their
certificate of search very peculiar.
Now I don't know where to look. I know it's possible that the
date is wrong, but I checked two counties for years before and
after 1893. I don't know if the state searches for one year only
or for years before and after a given date. their certificate of
search just says "1893, Jackson Co." If they only search one
year and the year is wrong, I could spend a lot of money trying
to find the right year and the right county.
I'd appreciate suggestions of how to pin down which county they
were married in and how to pin down a year. I am the oldest
descendant, so I can't ask any elders. My grandfather was born in
Ireland. He shows up with his parents in the 1890 census, she
shows up with her family in 1890 census, and with him in 1895
census, so I don't know where she was living in 1893. Wherever
it was was probably where they got married.
Thanks much for any assistance.
