Hi all,
Thank you for your replies about the location of the 'Black Hills'. I remembered that the Black Hills were in SD, but the obit for Thomas McClain made it sound like the Black Hills was a place in IA.
I was just wondering if, in 1855, there was a place in IA referred to as the 'Black Hills' or maybe if it was a nickname the Irish came up. The obit also mentioned Warren Co., the town of Wick, and the town Patterson (Madison co, where the rest of my McClains settled). It just seems odd that Thomas would go to SD when the rest of his family settled in Madison Co.
I appreciate your help. I guess I have many places to search.....well, I'd better get to it.
Thanks again,
Jane
