Hi gang.
This is my first posting to Huguenot-L so please forgive any lapses in netiquette.
I am descended from Pierre Robert II (born about 1675 in Basle, Switzerland, died French Santee, South Carolina) and
his second wife Judith. Some sources give Judith's surname as Videau(l) while others give it as de Bordeaux. Still others
seem to try to combine the two.
I see several possibilities that might reconcile these claims: 1) If she was adopted and the two names reflect both
her birth lineage and her adopted lineage. 2) If she was a foster child. 3) If she had been previously married and one of
the two names was the name of her first husband. 4) If de Bordeaux was not a surname at all but merely a place locator.
5) If the family was "gittin' out of Dodge" two steps ahead of the authorities and an alias was used to ease the
emigration.
Difficulties arise with each of these theories. I have never seen evidence of an adoption or foster arrangement. I
have never seen evidence of a previous marriage (on her part... Pierre was previously married.). If de Bordeaux is a
place name rather than a surname, why is her father's name differently reported? Why would she need an alias when the
other religious refugees did not?
It remains a mystery to me. Does anyone on the list have a definitive answer?
Love y'all,
