Dear Robert,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. The Martje who married David
Demarest would have been a bit older than my Martje [one generation
apart]. My Martje was still having kids in 1769.I'll check to see how
closely related the two Martjes were - my understanding is not too close,
but as I now have a more complete VB file, I can double check that.
Certainly the families in that area intermarried so often it makes it very
confusing to keep everybody straight. The frequency of same given names
doesn't help much!!! Guess we can blame that in part on the naming
traditions, the explanation of which I also appreciate. I suspected it
would be similar to the Dutch, but I wasn't sure.

BTW, members of the list may be interested in an article I found online
at the Making of America database at Cornell Univ. It's entitled "Huguenots
of New York City" and was published in the Continental Monthly Vol.2 Iss.2,
1862. I found it while doing a search for the names Bricou and Quintard,
but I think one can also search using the name of the publication. The
website is http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/moa/ It may not be anything new
for some of you who've been at this longer than I, but I found it very
informative as far as the families I'm mostly concerned about, and the area
where they settled. I'm finding it much easier to come across information
about New Paltz or New Rochelle, than for the families who went to Staten
Island and Long Island. My search continues, though I've now got a few more
clues to add to the puzzle.

It would seem the Bricous and Quintards may have been witnesses at the
baptisms of which I'm concerned, because of their common ties to the Fume
family. Isaac Quintard had married Jeanne Fume, while Pierre Bricou's wife
was Esther Fume [witness Marie Ann Bricou was Pierre and Esther 's
daughter. Not sure of link between Isaac Quintard and witness Pierre
Quintard]. I suspect the two women were sisters?

The other commonality seems to be that these families had come from
Poitou to NY via Bristol, England. This leads me to wonder if Benjamin
Appleby, Francois ___'s husband, may have had his roots in Bristol. There
were Applebys in Somerset and Devon at that time, according to IGI records,
and with Benjamin being a mariner, the link to the sea seems reasonable.
Would also suggest Francoise was part of that same group - from Poitou to
Bristol to NY. Hmm... I wish I could unearth more on the Fume family, but
all I have thus far is that Jeanne may have been the daughter of a David
Fume, also a Huguenot, but I can find no other references for that surname.
Any suggestions as to how else it might have been spelled or how it may
have evolved over the years?

I am very grateful for any and all assistance. If anyone has difficulty
finding the article mentioned above, just let me know, as I have the pages
as photo images on my hard drive and am happy to send along. Regards Aggi-Rose
