Subject: [Huguenot] Finnian records MELLEY, DE MELLEY
Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 10:28:59 -0000
I am looking for any information of the movement of Melley's from Switzerland (Vaud) through France to Worcester, England and Ireland prior to 1600. The name appears in Switzerland prior to 1500 and is listed by birth and death records as Protestant. In England as early as the mid to late 1500's it is present as Protestant. The late records in and around Donegal and the Irish branch are today mostly Catholic. roolsweb/fianna/surname/hug1.html is the only published notation we have at this time showing when Melley's entered Ireland in any context. There are many disjointed birth and death records along the way to show where they settled.
It seems by branch fled Europe for England and Ireland where in Ireland they converted by marriage back to Catholicism only to be persecuted by Cromwell and his forces. Go figure?
Regards,
Michael Melley
