Hi, My ancestor was there, Andre Arnaud. They disbanded because they had
purchased land that had disputed titles and the local residents were
harassing them and making life miserable for them. They also were not a
strong economic unit. They had trouble paying their minister, Rev. Carre,
who eventually removed to Boston. It was a weak religious group that had no
central, financial, backing by a larger church organization. There were only
a few French Huguenot Churches in the whole of New England, Frenchtown, RI,
Boston and Oxford, Mass..The other two close by were New Rochelle and New
Paltz, New York, and New Rochelle wasn't even an entity at that time.
There are scant records of their travels there and their exodus out. But
they do exist. There used to be a marker on the side of Rte. 2 , in East
Greenwich, RI, denoting there spot where the Huguenot's settlement existed,
just south of the intersection of Rte. 2 and Frenchtown Rd. A convenience
store was built there, the sign removed and the history forgotten.
I have spent a lifetime researching this group. Lots of fun. Andre Arnaud
ended up in New Rochelle, NY. I have copies of his land purchases and a copy
of his will. God Bless the Huguenots!
