<< let me allay any possible fears about critters
While I appreciate URQ's words of caution, let me add this:
As a member of a Florida archaeological society we were trained about
these possible
hazards----and in Florida we got beau coup of 'em.
And I've explored the lands in South Carolina and right cross the river,
in Berryville and
Ebenezer, for many hours, most often alone. And I aint been bit yet!
Shot guns---no.
Many local authorities take a dim view of firearms as do Park Rangers,
and private cemetery land owners. And as a former hunter, I don't care
for them being
carried in a mixed party of varying grades of expertise.
I've tromped all over those lands and swamps and never saw a dangerous
critter---they're too scared of us.
Snake bites are less common than lightning strikes and then almost never
fatal.
And, no 'gators----except for this rovingator. >>
Don & Listers--
I come from a large family of foresters, hunters, fishermen, campers &
outdoorsmen. They would not consider going into the forests, swamps & fields
during snake season without a shotgun. I'm glad you have never seen a
dangerous critter in SC but if you think SC's rattlers, mocs, & copperheads
are not a threat, you are fooling yourself.
I have a 5 ft. moc skin drying in the garage right now. One of my sons was
"trapped" in a tree stand last fall by a 6 ft. rattler coiled at the bottom
of the tree. I killed 2 copperheads in my yard (which is a fer piece from
water). I have a friend who was bitten (through snake boots), and another
friend whose horse almost died after being bitten in the neck (note how far
they can strike).
No gators??? We have a booming gator population. Twenty years ago we swam
carefree in the Santee lakes. Now you couldn't pay me to do so.
Don't want to scare anybody off. Most of the critters will take off if you
make a lot of noise. But those of us who live & search in SC know it is best
to be forewarned and cautious.
