The Biographical Directory of the South Carolina House of Representatives,
Vol II, The Commons House of Assembly 1699-1773, pg 325-327 (I paraphrase):

Charles Hill c. 1734. Father of Charles Hill d. 1751 (1st husband of Sarah
Coachman).
Grandfather of Benjamin Guerard; son-in-law of John Godfrey (d. 1717?);
father-in-law of John Guerard (1706-1764) and Maurice Lewis; brother-in-law
of JohnGodfrey (d. 1722) and John Abraham Motte.

Charles Hill immigrated to SC early in the 18th century and settled
Hillgrave plantation near Charleston. He left his wife Joan to manage the
plantation and sailed for Jamaica where in 1710 he was a merchant. Sometime
within the next two years he returned to SC and in 1712 purchased a 500 acre
plantaion on Seewee Bay. Using property inherited by his second wife,
Elizabeth Godfrey, as a nucleus he accumulated 300 1/2 acres on the Ashley
River opposite Charleston which he settled as Hillsborough plantation.
Although he owned several plantations, Hill was a Charleston merchant and
was concerned with the Indian trade. As the senior partnere in Charles Hill
& Company, he accumulated a sizable fortune. [There is more about the
various offices he held.] On 13 January 1715 Hill m. Elizabeth Godfrey, dau
of John Godfrey. They had 10 children: Richard, Elizabeth (m. John Guerard),
Charles, Jane (m. Maurice Lewis), John, Sarah (m. Dr. John Lining), Mary (m.
John Beswicke), Robert, Judith, and William Jeffries. Charles Hill was
buried 27 July 1734 in St. Andrew Parish. (Their sources are cited.)

Hill, Charles (d. 1751). Son of Charles Hill (d. 1734); grandson of John
Godfrey (d. 1717?); son-in-law of George Smith (1693-1730); brother-in-law
of John Guerard (1706-1764) and Marice Lewis.

Charles Hill, son of Charles Hill and Elizabeth Godfrey, was born in St.
Andrew Parish sometime between 1715 and 1718. With his in-laws he was a
member of the prosperous mercantile firm of Hill & Guerard which had
considerable interests in the Indian and salve trades. ...On 6 Mar 1746 he
wed Sarah Smith, daughter of George Smith and Elizabeth Allen. Sarah was
young lady with a "large fortune." Their marriage was childless. Charles
Hill died sometime between 24 May 1751 when the grand jury list was taken
and 22 nov 1751 when his will was proved. He was buried in the family vault
at Hillsborough plantation.

I also have some Guerard information as they are in my husband's family
also.

Please keep in mind that I have found some information in this volume that
was not correct. If you would like me to scan the entire sections with the
sources they cite, let me know. Also, I typed very fast--may be some
typographical errors!
