Bon jour, fellow Hug. listers -- while looking through the FHL Catalog on
the LDS website (www.familysearch.org) I saw the following book under Place
Search for France, subheading Minorities. I thought I would pass this info
along in case anyone else is interested. I haven't read the book myself,
merely saw it listed on this site, but it looks very interesting.
The author is Abraham D. Lavender (which I had not realized before was
Huguenot -- I have seen it many times in parish records of east Kent, ENG).
The book's title is French Huguenots: Mediterranean Catholics to White
Anglo-Saxon Protestants. It has 264 pages, is indexed and has a 20 page
bibliography. It was published c1990 in New York by Peter Lang. The ISBN is
07400462, the ISSN 082041136.
Unfortunately, LDS has not filmed it but, if anyone is lucky enough to
be going to Salt Lake, the call numbers are 973/F2Lav. The book summary says
that the book outlines the "development of the Huguenot Protestants of
France as they broke from the traditional Catholic society in the beginning
of the early 1500's and goes to the early 1800's in the United
States......and how the Huguenots became a prominent part of Anglo-Saxon
Protestant culture but also kept a French identity, bridging two contrasting
cultures."
Hope someone finds this of interest. I wonder if the book is readily
available? Not published that long ago -- but my experience has been that,
if a book was published as an academic text not meant for the general public
(which this might be), the price is "out of sight". Regards, Andrea
(Vancouver Island, BC, Canada)
