Thnak you for your welcome post Bill (Knecht). It has spurred me on to
contact my french sources!
The family patronymic was ARMUET/ARMET. The name of Bonrepos came from their
principal seigneurie- thus Francois Armet sgr de Bonrepos became Monsieur de
BONREPOS in name and in appellation, but the registers and the Etat Civil
would have him registered as in the first Instance and as the centuries
followed the name of the Land they held became part of the patronymic, thus
double or triple barrelled 'de's' in France will normally suggesta
territorial name . sometimes the original patronymic was conveniently lost ,
especially in the latter part of the 16th c when the 'de' became a very
contentious social prerequisite!
It happened in my family- we were plain BOISSIER, from the late 14th c to the
early 16c. The marriage to an heiress enabled the family to lose the Boissier
and become de LORIOL, but in this case it was a patronymic they adopted not
the name of a seigneurie. Even the name 'de Loriol ' was strictly not correct
as the name was originally ORIOLI and BOISSIER was originally BOYSSERI,
WHICH WHEN GALLICISED WAS INTERPRETED as de Loriol and de boissier
I loved the motif on your envelope!
By the way Couches, from whence your Armuet/Armet came from was at the time
,from 1600-1765, part of a fief of my family. The present Chateau has some
superb portraits of my ancestors. Couches wsa also a protestant stronghold
and masses were celebrated in the Castle chapel under the aegis and
protection of the then Marquis de Loriol chandieu!
I am away for a week so I will get back to you on my return!
All the best!
Peter
