Hi All,

Robin Godefroy asked about the GODEFROY family
who origionated from Rouen.....
My wife is still hard at work extracting ALL the names from
Quevilly/Rouen and entering them in a massive database...
Of course the records end in 1685, and we have yet to transcribe
the most recent years, but here is something which confirms that
the family were living there for some generations.....

1. Pierre Godefroy = Judith Boissel
2. Jean Godefroy = Noelle Heurtmatte m. 2 Jul 1645, Rouen
3. Pierre Godefroy bpt. 25 Apr 1655, Rouen
3. Jean Godefroy bpt. 24 Mar 1652, Rouen
3. Jacques Godefroy bpt. 25 Dec 1646, Rouen
3. Abraham Godefroy bpt. 12 Apr 1646, Rouen
= Susanne Malortie m. 7 Jan 1674
2. Abraham Godefroy bpt. Oct 1642, Rouen
= Marie Herman m. 7 Jun 1673, Rouen

1. Pierre Godefroy = Elizabeth Lestudios
2. Madeleine Godefroy = Isaac Lucas m. 1651, Lintot
2. Jean Godefroy = Jeanne Benetot
2. Jacques Godefroy = Marie Sirot m. 12 Feb 1654, Rouen

It is quite possible that if you look through the most recent years
i.e. up to 1685 you will find the birth of Jean Godefroy who married
Francoise Marple and whose child Jean was born in Rouen in 1707..
(Marple by the way does not seem to be a Rouen name, it does not
show up in the Quevilly records.)

After 1685 you may find that the Godefroy family had their children
baptised in a catholic church - there are a lot to chose from in Rouen...
they might however have had a civil marriage...which in those days involved a
settlement orcontract being written, and some of which still exist in the
Archives Departmental in Rouen amongst the papers from the Notaries which were
collected there. One of our french cousins may correct me on my terminology
but I believe it was refered to a marriage contract..
These contracts give parents names and often other family relations are
attending as witnesses etc....These records are available only in France I am
afraid, as far as I know they have not been filmed. I wish they were...

My own ancestors from Le Havre had their children baptised in the Catholic
church of Notre Dame in the early 1700's, even though they were never married
in a catholic church and their children may have been concidered illigitimate
therefor...
Evaentually the family did escape to England as so many did..

I will keep a lookout for more Godefroy's in Rouen

Best wishes

Chris Shelley
