Dear John,
As in all genealogical research, you must begin with what you know and work
backwards. But it is very difficult to verify a relationship to someone that
far back in history. There are Hunyadi genealogies available, but not every
Hunyadi is going to be found on them, even those who are legitimately
related. Add to that the fact that the name merely means "from Hunyad," a
county in historic Hungary now in Romania. Logically one would expect many
people "from Hunyad" who have no relationship whatsoever to the historic
figure.
A further complication is that records from present-day Romania are
generally difficult to access. Even Hungarians who are Romanian citizens are
discouraged from searching the records. Professional genealogists working in
Romania may do better, but I have no direct information on that.
You give very little information regarding your great-grandfather, but I
would guess that he was the Janos Hunyadi who was born in 1889 and
immigrated in 1905 aboard the Carpathia. His ship manifest indicates he was
from "Dombo K.K." This is quite probably Küküllődombó in old Kis-Küküllő
near Dicsőszentmárton. You can see these on the old map at
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/kis-kuk.jpg, or at MapQuest under the
Romanian names Dambau and Tarnaveni.
On a more positive note, there do seem to be associations between Janos
Hunyadi and Küküllő, including the following: ". . . in 1448 Hunyadi János
takes action against the trespasses of Küküllővár lords" (Csánki Dezső,
Hungary's historical geography in the age of Hunyadi).
By the way, I was unable to find a manifest for Matthias/Matyas/Matthew.
There is a record for Mihaly Hunyadi who immigrated in 1909 from Dombo to
his cousin Janos in Columbus Ohio, leaving his father Janos behind in Dombo.
Since Janos Hunyadi who immigrated in 1905 also had a father named Janos,
there were at least two families in Dombo headed by a Janos Hunyadi.
The 1910 Census for Cleveland shows a Mat and John Hunyadi who immigrated
(per the census) in 1904 and 1907, respectively. Both were single. Are these
yours?
I do wish you the best in your very difficult search.
Janet
