I have been told by my Mother, that my mother's paternal side, are
descendants of John Hunyadi aka Janos Hunyadi. My grandfather (John
Hunyadi) came to America from Hungary in approximately 1905, with his
brother Matthias. I have done some research via the Ellis Island records
and found my grandfather's name on the Carpathian ship's manifest, that
was the ship that my Grandfather, and Great Uncle Matthias, traveled
from Hungary to America on.

I am now trying to do some research back in time from my grandfather,
and try to validate the roots that lead back to Janos Hunyadi, who lived
from 1387-1456. My mother (now deceased) told me that my grandfather
told the family many times, and actually pointed to Janos Hunyadi's
picture/biography in the encyclopedia's of the day, and reminded the
family members that "we are related to him". So, that being said, is
there any research that you could recommend I could investigate that
might help me to piece together the missing links in my heritage back to
Janos Hunyadi?

Thank You,
John (Janos) Riske

Deli _is_ a Hungarian word, although not much used. It's an adjective
that refers to a well-built (tall/strong/good-looking) man.
The ethimology of the surname can of course be different.

Michele,

In Hungarian the name written first is the family name. So, if your
gr-grandmother's name were, for example, Miklos Julia, in English it
would
be Julia Miklos. Miklos normally is a man's first name, but it is also
used
as a family name, but not very often.

I hope this help.

Joseph M. Nemeth

Hi Michele,

yes, in the given case Mikl?s was first name. But there are lots of
families who have it as surname.
