The port of departure you questioned, Fiume is today called Rijeka and is in
Croatia but when so many of the Hungarians came thro that port is was part
of Austria-Hungary and located south east not north and in the northern end
of the Adriatic sea.
It was every bit as close and they did not have to cross borders to get to
