Hello Lori......First of all, welcome to this list. And second, Hungary is a large country especially when you are searching for two people with one's surname unknown. Do you have anything at all to indicate a village........a town........a region.........a megye (county)? You will really need to find that out. Have you looked at their immigration papers?? Most of the time, they state just the country but sometimes also the village.

They had to petition the US government for citizenship and this was usually done in the county they lived in. Would that be New York?? If you find the petition, then you will also find the "Declaration of Citizenship". This will give a lot of information to you....where they came from, what ship they came on, and when they arrived.

Also, the U.S. Census will hold a lot of information. You might start with the 1900 census and if NY is where they lived, you will have to try and find the county they lived in. Then it will be easier.

Anyway, good luck!!! If you have any more questions, please email.

Cheers and Luck,

Jan

Hello fellow listers,

I'm brand new to this list, and just starting to research my in-laws, the
HUDAK's.

Michael HUDAK was born abt. 1864 in Hungary, and I've got his immigration
abt. 1895 to New York.
His wife was Helen, maiden name not known. She was born abt. the same,
1864, and I'm showing
her immigration as 1899. My feeling is that they married in Hungary, and
Michael immigrated before
Helen.

Michael and Helen had a daughter Helen in NYC, and she was my husbands
grandmother.

If anyone has run into anything on these folks, I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks so much,

Lori Nichols
