Hungarian Mourning Notices being microfilmed

Mourning notices/funeral cards for the Kingdom of Hungary date back to the early- mid-1800s and continue to the present, though the last decade has seen less diligent management and compliance due to alternative digital technology for printing offices and in-home publication abilities. A collection of nearly 800,000 pieces has been housed at the National Szechenyi Library on Castle Hill in Budapest, but have only been available for on-site research. This is all about to change, as the entire collection is now in the process of being microfilmed.

The records for the 1800s are in strict alphabetical order, as are those from 1970-present. Earlier twentieth century pieces are in alphabetical order by the first three letters of the surname. When visiting there in mid-March 2004, it was unclear whether the latter would be placed in strict alphabetical order during the filming process or remain in their original order. Regardless, the knowledge that this key collection is being preserved and will be available for outside research is exciting news.

Watch for more updates as its completion draws near and the acquiring repositories are learned. Meanwhile, the bad news is that this collection is not available for research during the interim.
