Subject: Translation of old feudal terms
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 2004 10:27:29 -0400

Is there anyone out there who might be able to translate some old feudal
terms? In a list of individuals on an estate in the 1400s, most of the serfs
are described as “vadnai jobbágy.” Does anyone know what “vadnai” means? Two
individuals (brothers? father and son?) are designated as “magán,” which I
think might mean they are the estate managers. A different individual is
designated as “kedvezményezett,” (beneficiary) which I think might mean that
he is the landowner. Lastly, there are six individuals designated as “kiraly
ember” (king’s man?). What might this actually mean? Can anyone confirm my
hunches? Thanks.
