It's not that difficult. Step children have no blood relationship to their step parent or step
brothers/sisters.
My grandfather was a widower and he married a widow. They both had children. His children were her
step children. Her children were his step children. Together they had a son and daughter. To his
children they were half brother and sister through the father and to her children they were half
brother and sister through the mother. Their children were the only ones that had a blood
relationship to the step children on both sides. His and her step children had no blood
relationship, only a legal one. Her children were not involved in his estate and his children were
not involved in her estate, only their children were involved in both estates. When the half sister
died unmarried and intestate, step children on both sides were involved because there was a blood
relationship.
