An interesting comment of yours Linda is that God parents had same surname
as the parents. You also mentioned the child bearing the same first name as
the godparent or did I misread that? I had not heard that before.

What I have often seen in my family and in friends in the past is the
choice of the godparents being someone from the fathers side and someone
from the mothers side. When the parents had only one sibling you would see
them being god parents over and over for all the children. Sometimes a
spouse would be used. I have also seen Aunts and Uncles of the parents
used.

The days when a God parent was chosen to be the substitute parent in case of
death are long since gone.

Legally, it doesn't work.....not in this country anyway.

I think I will stick with the answer that there is no set rules or customs.
