I do not think you can say with any certainty they were or they weren't.
Perhaps in Hungary, you would see that happening more frequently than here.

You have to remember many of our parents and grandparents came here alone
and had no family other than their spouse so they would ask a friend or
sometimes a neighbor or someone they worked with.

My grandfather married in NJ and his brother lived in PA. They did not
stand up for each other and they were not godparents to each others
children. They may not have been able to afford the train fare.
