Interesting Sandi,

My husbands grandfather was an illegitimate child as were a brother and
sister. All three family lore says had the same father but no one knows
what his name was. Some recall hearing Adamo...well that could be a first
name or a last name. His birth is supposed to have taken place on the lower
east side of NYC. We have searched and searched and cannot come up with any
thing. The Churches in the area have no records under Adama or his mothers
surname. Later one she married (?) a man named Cardinale and all the
children born before and after that relationship started using the name
Cardinale. That is how they show up on the 1900 Census....they weren't here
for the 1880.

When these children married, they used the name Cardinale...some even
applied for Social Security under that name or saying that Nicolo Cardinale
was there father when indeed he wasn't.

My husbands grandfather switched back and forth from Cardinale, Cardinal,
Belmont and Belmonte. Why the latter no one knows....at one point he even
used Fisher.

He died using the name Belmont and that is the name on his social security
records.....he claims his fathers name was Belmont.

In case he was telling the truth, we searched the birth records again....and
no record was found under that name.

I suspect the only way the truth MAY be found is if the Archdioces of NY
allows filming of all the Baptism records and we find him by looking for his
mother.

Am glad you found your family
