What Elizabeth says about handwriting changing from generation is so true. My grandmother was born in 1881 and had beautiful script writing. I was born in 1942 but was very used to reading her letters and although my writing looked different from hers I had no problem reading her letters.

In the 1970s I helped with a girl's organization where I supervised the girls who were secretary. If an older person sent a letter they absolutely couldn't read what the letters said. This was all in English writing. So if you throw in a different culture plus handwriting I can see the problem.
