I am researching the ARTWOHL name from Alho, Hungary, 1910 to St. Paul,
MN./Chicago. Unable to find it on map websites. One spoke Croatian. Also
one listed father Joseph at Alho, Eisenburg, Hungary. Eisenburg seems German
to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Sue,

Alh was in county Vas, district Felsr. Look for Markt Allhau in Austria
today.

Hi Sue,

Just to add to what Joe has already posted for you--

Alh was in Fels-Er Jrs, Vas Megye. This was a fairly large settlement
of about 1800 people. There was a Luthern church in the settlement. Roman
Catholics went to nearby Farcasfalva. Today it is in Austria and called
Marct Allhau.

Eisenburg was the German name for the settlement Vasvr, Vasvr Jrs, Vas
Megye. This village had about 960 people living in it. There were Jewish
and Roman Catholic houses of worship in the village. Lutherns went to
Nagykolta for services, while those of the Reformed faith went to
Terestynszecsd. Vasvar remains in Hungary today and can be viewed on this
interactive map of Hungary--
http://lazarus.elte.hu/moterkep/mb.htm

You can also find all of these placenames on the 1910 map--
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/vas.jpg

To see what census and vital records are available from the above churches,
you can visit the LDS Family History catalog online--
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitydetails&subject=77561&subject_disp=Hungary,_Vas&columns=*,180,0

Best of luck,
Suzannej

Hi Deanna,

Answer to question #1--Try our own Suzannej's CD-ROM,
The Hungarian Village Finder, Atlas, and Gazetteer for
the Kingdom of Hungary:
http://hungarianvillagefinder.com/cdrom/CD.html

That page will show you what's included in the CD
including population, what churches were in the
villages, and where they went if there was no church
in the village. The CD also has numerous links to
maps, direct links to the LDS catalog for each megye
so that you can see what records are available from
those churches, and tons of other stuff. Take a look
for yourself.

Suzanne has also put up a page that sort of goes along
with the ad for the CD but it has a lot of good hints
and suggestions, so you might want to take a look at
it too:
http://hungarianvillagefinder.com/cdrom/4steps.html

Answer to question #2--Suzanne is also the webmaster
(mistress?) of the Rootsweb site which has a lot of
links I use all the time including a link to the
Message Board where you can post your questions:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wghungar/

There is also the GenForum message board:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/hungary/

and the Hungarotips, but this one does not seem to get
much action:
http://www.hungarotips.com/bbs/

Janos Bogardi aka Radix has quite a site with tons of
information and links to all sorts of things
Hungarian, so you can visit those pages and start
bookmarking:
http://www.bogardi.com/gen/index.shtml

And a short while back a few people posted a bunch of
their links so you might want to access the archives
for those. You can reach the Archives through the
HungaryGenWeb address above.

As for missing links and pages, they come and go all
the time. Anything in particular you are referring
to?

Hope this helps,
Steve

Subject: [HUNGARY-L] Looking for a recipe

My grandmother used to make a cheese pie for me (because she knew I like
it!), but no one in my family knows the recipe. I have hunted in Hungarian
cookbooks from here to ... Hungary!! ... but have not come across a recipe
for a cheese pie. Any ideas where else to look?

Hi Deanna,

where did you pick up you vocabulary - like frustration?:-) A difficult word and loaded with depressing meaning. Better try to look at the bright side of things: should be a life philosophy as well as a genealogical
aim!

Let's face it: we can't go back to Adam and Eve or worst yet to the scientists' Lucy - or the newest Chad skull ... which is estimated to be almost 7 million years old!:-) And we can but locate - as the saying goes -
one dead body at a time (or a piece of it - a tidbit).

This is a hunt, a detective story if you please, and if you approach it the right way provides a lot of fun. Living the hunt (being the detective) is the gist of it ... not the names and numbers.

Yes it takes time, and effort, and a lot of patience. That leaves you time to design your next step, come up with a new strategy, locate an angle you haven't noticed before. Learn about history, geography and
customs. Imagine the life and times of those forebears. And enjoy it. That's genealogy. (And only in parentheses: remember that there will be genealogists in your family in the future [as unlikely as it looks today!:-)]
who would like to enjoy the hunt too. So
you have to leave some 'bodies' for them!:-))

Maybe I made it sound worse than I meant it!

my vocabulary..as you put it... comes from being online too many yrs in an instant message routine which uses alot of slang... and short cuts...

Thanks for pointling it out to me... which means I should strive to do better....

I'm not gloom and doom.... I have recently found out I'm going to recieve letters from Hungary along with some important documents pertaining to my family history...

Putting this puzzle together is as thrilling to me as it is for all of you...

I have worked on my family history for five yrs... and am pretty good at finding my way around the internet... Although I am alot younger than most who pursue thier history I do not like being labeled as stupid... and would never be mean to someone like that...

I am quite clearly asking for advice... not a cut down...

Thank you all for your help!

Deanna
