Hi Ann,
there has to be a mistake somewhere in your description. If the person died
at age six en route to the US, he can't possibly be the ancestor of your
husband!
As to what happened to dead at sea: I can't say what they did in 1902, but
here is a site that describes the conditions in 1847 - the height of the Irish
Famine.
