"Merk" is Mérk [Mirk, Merken in german] in the hungarian pre-WWI Szatmár
Varmegye/County, nagy-károlyi jaras/district, at NE from Nagy-Károlyi,
between Vállaj and Fábiánháza; 253 houses and 1509 inhabitants in 1888. In
1910, 2548 inhabitants.
Starting 1950, Mérk and Vállaj merged and in 1955 the 2 places split again.
Today, the place is know as Mérk in Szabolcs-Szatmár Megye and is on the
border between Hungary and Romania.
But, attention!, before WWI existed also in Hungary an Alsó-Mérk and an
Felsö-Mérk in Sáros Varmegye, place which will be known as Mérk after the 2
villages merged. This place is today known as Mirkovce, in Slovak Republic.
