Has anyone encountered anything like this...

Let's say....

Man and woman get married...have one son, father dies a year and a half later.
Wife is quite young.
Then she disappears from the church records! Can't find any trace of her
later on...
(re-marraige or death)
perhaps she moved to another town with her son??
If she did and let's say she remarried...would her SON take the name of the
new father? Or would he keep his original surname?
