Hello Listers, I know that there have been a number of inquiries and
replies of late regarding sources for histories, geographical,
sociological, and political information on Hungary and the surrounding
regions. Other listers have confirmed that to understand certain
aspects of family life, movements, and emigration patterns and
pressures, you should acquaint yourself with appropriate background
material.

It may seem off the point of the central questions, “Who am I? Who are
my ancestors?” that is the singular focus of some genealogists, but
think about it this way for a moment. If someone were studying you in
the distant future, could they understand your life without
understanding the realities of the world in which you lived? Certainly
it would be better if we each left an intimate diary that explained our
motives and actions or rather that our ancestors each left one! Lacking
this, the next best thing is to understand something of the forces at
work in our lifetimes.

To this end, folks are often given one or more URLs to follow.

So, at risk of being redundant, I would like to give yet another URL
that is an excellent source of on-line reading. Possibly a few of you
are not familiar with this particular source. It is DON MABRY’S
HISTORICAL TEXT ARCHIVE site. This site has many, many articles,
treatises, and books on a wide variety of subjects. I discovered it
years ago long before I discovered HUNGARY-L. It used to be on a
University of Mississippi server but now seems to have moved to a site
of its own.

Here is a partial list of titles that can be found on the Europe section
of that site:

A Short History Of Austria-Hungary And Poland [Book]
Hungary: A Brief History
An Undiplomatic Diary By The American Member Of The Inter-Allied
Military Mission To Hungary, 1919-1920
The Annotated Memoirs Of Admiral Miklós Horthy, Regent Of Hungary
The Hungarian Revolt, October 23 - November 4, 1956
John Flournoy Montgomery, Hungary: The Unwilling Satellite

A History Of East Central Europe
Suitors And Suppliants :The Little Nations At Versailles
The Economic Consequences Of The Peace
The Baltics: Nationalities And Other Problems
On Yugoslavia, Observations From November, 1991 To August, 1992
Catholics Cleanse Salzburg Of Protestants
Salzburger Exile Song
Feudalism Bibliography

Some of these articles can run to well over a hundred pages, though most
are shorter. That may be off-putting for some in this age of the sound
bite—“Just tell me what (you think) I need to know!”—in our ‘I’m in a
hurry’ world. I take the view that I can have a fairly extensive and
complete library of valued references available at my convenience—items
that are comprehensive and not just of a superficial length. It is
fascinating reading and can be a source of inspiration for breaking down
that brick wall. You will learn a lot—more than you can anticipate. So
it is worth the time to at least look over some of these titles. I
recommend the first two in particular.
