Magyar food
Someone Commented:
My grandmother made a sweet dough that she used to stretch across the

entire table it was so thin. This dough was then covered with a

poppyseed filling and then rolled up, coiled on a cookie sheet and

baked.=20

Reply:

What I think you might be referring to is M=E1kos (Poppyseed) Kifli and

Dios (walnut) Kifli. =20
Correction:
No, not kifli but that was the R=C9TES or in German strudel.
Kifli is the hard crusted crescent roll. The predecessor of the French=20
croissant. First made by Magyar bakers to mock the occupying Turk's crescent=
=20
in their flag. (c1600).
Also: M=E1kos (Poppyseed) and Dios (walnut) BIEGLI was made mostly around=20
Christmas and Easter. (thicker pastry, rolled up).
You see the ingenious Magyars created delicious food from what they could=20
grow around the house, poppy, apple, walnut, cherry all became finger-lickin=
g=20
food.
