Subject: [HUNGARY-L] Bu"dszentmihály and other -bu"d -bo"d places
Date: Thu, 02 Nov 2000 00:18:29 -0500
Hi all,
when we were looking for the subject place that Magda forwarded here
and described Budszentmihaly "as in Something Saint - Michaels", it
caught my eye that Bu"d- too. None of my Hungarian dictionaries contain
the word. So I accessed the site of the National Academy of Sciences in
Hungary, looked up the Linguistics Institute and sent the director a
question ... not really expecting an answer.
But I was mistaken. Prof. Kiefer personally answered my query and
explained that the origin of the word comes from bo" (roomy, wide, loose
fitting [cloths]; rich, plentiful, copious), used to be a given name,
and with a -d suffix became a place name - and we have recorded usage of
it since 1221.

This just for your information ...
