Subject: [HUNGARY-L] Immigration Name Changes
Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 08:27:20 -0400

All the recent discussion of name changes reminded me of a joke a heard awhile ago. I hope no one minds if I share it - I thought it could give us all a chuckle and relieve the frustrations we feel in doing our research!

A ship docks at Ellis Island and the immigrants, of varied ethnic backgrounds, line up to go through the various phases of the immigration process. After undergoing all their tests they are in line at the last desk where they have to state their names, which the immigration officer records in his log book. The line moves along and a big, able bodied Irish man steps up to the desk. The immigration officer asks his name and bellows "Patrick O'Reilly". The immigration officers repeats the name while writing it in his book. "Patrick O'Reilly". The next man in line is a short man who is Chinese. The immigration officer looks at him and says "Name?" and the man replies "Sam Ting". The immigration officer nods his head, begins writing in his book, and says "Patrick O'Reilly".
