The Hungarian Tradition in our family was for Grandma to bake "Hungarian
Cakes" (kolaches). The only thing we've modified is the size of each one as
reflected in the following recipe:
INGREDIENTS
one pound butter
one pound cream cheese
4 cups sifted all purpose flour
one teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS
Cream butter and Cream cheese well together.
Then blend into the flour.
Refrigerate overnight (important)
Apricots, boiled down or cans of Apricot filling (Solo). (Other fillings may
be used, this is our favorite)
Take out of refrigerator about 10 minutes before using
Cut into fourths
Roll a fourth out about 1/8th inch thick.
Cut in Squares about 2 x 2 inches
Fill with filling, fold over two of the opposite corners
Bake in moderate oven (375) until golden brown in color (about 20 minutes)
Brush BEFORE baking with egg YOLK and water (1 yolk to about 1 tablespoon of
water)
