Hi...although I've been on the list for several months (and several hundred mailings), this is my first attempt to obtain information or assistance. Researching my grandparents (John (Janos) Futato & Anna Kadlecz), of which little is known about their lives prior to immigration. I have learned from immigration records and the ship passenger list that my grandfather was born and raised in Magyar Hermany in the former Udvarhely County, which I am now under the impression is located in modern Romania's Covasna County in central Romania, about 15km nw of the town of Sfintu Gheorghe (Saint George?) and 5km ne of Baraolt (formerly Barot). Having surfed some web sites containing Romanian maps, I've noticed a majority of the former names have been changed. Has Magyar Hermany changed?

How do I attempt to learn information from Magyar Hermany, such as, birth, parents, siblings (of which there were reportedly four), etc? Also, my grandfather reportedly served in the Austro-Hungarian Army c. 1900 - 1904. Is it possible to obtain military records? My grandmother, although reportedly naturalized, has been a lot more difficult to obtain documented information on. She reportedly came from the town of Udvarnok or Octvarno. I would like to know it's location in the former empire, as well as it's modern location. Also, I am aware that the Futato name is apparently a rare Hungarian name (although I saw it listed in an 1891(?) census of shopkeepers in Hungary. Apparently the Kadlecz name is a little more common. How do I go about attempting to contact Kadlecz' in Hungary or wherever. I know when my grandmother died in 1960, her obituary listed a brother Paul Kadlecz of Hungary, who she reportedly remained in close contact with. I would like to find his childr!
en or grandchildren.

Any information or advice will be appreciated.

Kevin J. Futato
