For those of you who are not aware of what is going on relative to
transcribing immigrant passenger lists, there is a group of a couple of
hundred individuals who are presently working on transcribing immigrant
passenger lists. These lists can be found at: http://istg.rootsweb.com/
(the istg stands for Immigrant Ship Transcriber's Guild). This group is
transcribing the passenger ship lists and posting them at the above web site.
Anyone can go to that Web Site and can view all of the transcribed lists
that are posted on the Web Site. There is NO COST for this--It is FREE!!
You can call up the completed ships by the Name of the Ship, By the Port of
Arrival, By the year it landed in the U.S., by the Name of the ship's
Captain, and by the surname of the immigrant (and not in Soundex, but by the
spelling of the name).
The Web Site also gives you all of the background information on the
Immigrant Ship Transcriber's Guild and information on what they are doing.
They have completed over 1,000 ships to date. However, it is important to
realize that they are still working on many ships and not all of them have
been transcribed as yet. I checked the Web Site and learned that to date
there are only two (2) ships completed that landed in New York in 1903 but I
am certain that many more are in progress.
Before embarking on a duplicate effort of transcribing passenger lists, I
suggest that anyone interested in this subject should first check out the Web
Site at:
http://istg.rootsweb.com/
As I stated, there is no Charge or Cost for you to check out the passenger
lists, but you must acknowledge that ISTG has the copywrite for the
information posted on the site. Once you acknowledge that copywrite ownership
you get immediate access to any of the posted lists.
