Well, yes and no. Yes, you're right that Berger is a German name, not a
Magyar name. However, it was not a typical Jewish name either, at least in
the Burgenland, where dozens of Berger families and shop owners were
Catholic, in places like Deutschkreutz, Kobersdorf, and Lackenbach. I have
found a few Jewish Bergers, but most by far are Catholics. Many other
Catholic families are 'Perger.'
